Tyson Ross (10-10) wasn't at his best, but was good enough. Despite giving up five walks, Ross allowed just one run as the Padres beat the Cardinals 3-1.

The offense was supplied by Jedd Gyorko, who had two hits including the go-ahead RBI single in the sixth. Yangervis Solarte homered in the seventh, his second as a Padres and the first batting from the left side.

Game two of the series is Wednesday night at Petco Park.
