The Padres scored three runs in the bottom of the first off of Paul Maholm. They got another two in the fifth inning on a two-run homer by Chris Denorfia, his 4th of the season. Maholm (7-5) pitched into the sixth before being replaced by reliever David Carpenter.

Atlanta tacked on a run in the eighth and another in the ninth to cut the Padres lead to 5-3. Reliever Nick Vincent struck out Justin Upton looking with two on to end the game and earn his first save of the season.

The 5-3 win by the Friars completed their first sweep of the Braves in San Diego since 2005. The Padres open a three game series against the Diamondbacks Friday night.
