Padres Sign Seven

Team avoids salary arbitration with all eligible players

A.J. Preller has been so busy bringing in guys from other teams, it's easy to forget he had a bunch of players on the roster who needed attending to.

Seven Padres filed for salary arbitration. None of them will go to a hearing. On Friday, the Padres announced all seven guys have agreed to a new contract.

Here is the full list:

Alexi Amarista (IF/OF) : 2 years, $2.5 million
Andrew Cashner (RHP) : 1 year, $4 million
Ian Kennedy (RHP) : 1 year, $9.85 million
Tyson Ross (RHP) : 1 year,  $5.25 million
Shawn Kelley (RHP) : 1 year, $2.8 million
Dale Thayer (RHP) : 1 year, $1.3 million
Yonder Alonso (1B) : 1 year, $1.6 million

This gives Preller time to either try and work out long-term contracts with the guys he sees as part of the Padres' future, as well as avoids any arbitration hearings, which can get a little messy.

Friday's signings mean the Padres will likely have an Opening Day payroll of right around $90 million. In fact, it will be almost exactly the same figure they opened the 2014 season with. That number (which does not include money like the more than $5 million that will go to Cory Luebke, if he's ready for Spring Training or not) will change a bit more as Preller massages the roster.
