Padres Rookie Lit up Again in Loss

Walker Lockett pulled early in another bad outing against the Phillies

Entering Saturday night’s game against the Phillies at Petco Park the Padres had won two games in a row. They had not won three straight games since June 2-4.

They’ll have to try and start another winning streak on Sunday.

The Friars fell to the Phils 5-1 after another disappointing start from rookie Walker Lockett. The right-hander allowed five runs on five hits, two of them home runs, in just 4.2 innings to take another loss and run his ERA to 9.60.

Lockett has been trying to solidify his spot in the Padres starting rotation but it hasn’t materialized. He has not gone past 5.0 innings or allowed fewer than four earned runs in any of his three big league starts.

The San Diego bullpen, however, was tremendous to keep the game from getting out of hand. Robert Stock made arguably his best appearance with the Padres going 2.2 shutout innings with four strikeouts, one of them on a fastball that hit 100 MPH.

Phil Maton tossed a perfect 8th and Trey Wingenter, another rookie, handled a scoreless 9th.

Offensively the Padres got seven hits but they came from three players. Hunter Renfroe and Austin Hedges each had a pair of knocks and Cory Spangenberg went 3-4. He scored San Diego’s only run on a 7th inning sacrifice fly off the bat of Manuel Margot.

The Padres can still win the series from Philadelphia on Sunday afternoon when rookie lefty Joey Lucchesi gets the start against veteran Jake Arrieta.
