Padres Lose Solarte to Injury

Friars place infielder on DL but do have good news as well

We have good news and bad news for the Padres. I’m one of those who likes to start with the bad news so we can end on a positive so it pains me to say the Friars had to put a promising young pitcher and their emotional leader on the disabled list on Friday.

Infielder Yangervis Solarte and right-handed pitcher Miguel Diaz are both on the 10-day DL. Solarte has an oblique muscle strain and Diaz has a strain in his pitching forearm. To take their places on the roster catcher Hector Sanchez was removed from the disabled list and infielder Carlos Asuaje was recalled from El Paso.

Solarte has been swinging one of the hottest bats on the team with 17 hits in his last 12 games before suffering the injury on Tuesday in Chicago. Diaz was hurt the next day at Wrigley Field.

But, we do get to temper that with something positive. The Padres wasted no time is signing their top draft pick.

High school lefty MacKenzie Gore has agreed to a contract. He'll get about a $6.7 million dollar bonus, right in line with the recommended money for the 3rd overall pick. Gore will sign the deal before Saturday night’s game with the Tigers at Petco Park.
