Padres Lose First Series in Nearly a Month

Friars drop three of four in Atlanta at end of long road trip

The last time Julio Teheran was on a Major League mound was in San Diego when he gave up three home runs in four innings in a loss to the Padres. He then went on the disabled list with a thumb injury he suffered batting in that game.

On Sunday, the Braves right-hander faced the Padres again, this time in Atlanta, and he had to leave early again. But the time he spent pitching was a lot more effective.

Teheran threw six innings of no-hit ball in a 4-1 Braves win. He didn’t get the chance to continue his no-hit bid because his hamstring cramped up on a hot, humid Georgia day but he did strike out 11 San Diego hitters.

Shane Carle replaced him and gave up a single to Cory Spangenberg with one out in the seventh inning. The Friars were able to get six hits over the next three innings but only push across one run, on a sacrifice fly by Jose Pirela in the eighth inning.

The Padres, still missing Joey Lucchesi in the starting rotation, went with another bullpen game. Matt Strahm started and threw 2 1/3 shutout innings. He gave way to rookie Jose Castillo, who had allowed just one hit in 21 at-bats coming into the game.

Eventually, everyone has a rough day. Castillo gave up a pair of runs on a Johan Camargo double in the fourth inning that put the Braves on top 2-0. Atlanta got another pair in the eighth when Tyler Flowers hit a 2-run home run off Brad Hand.

This is the first time the Padres have lost a series since dropping two of three to the Dodgers in May but they finish their 10-game road trip with a 5-5 record. The Padres take Monday off then play two games at Petco Park against the Oakland A’s before going right back out on the road for four games in San Francisco and three in Texas against the Rangers.
