Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. Sometimes, you think you're on the road to victory, but instead take a detour -- that's kind of what happened to the Padre's Wednesday night against the Mariners.

Kouzmanoff continued his hot streak with a two-run blast. He's driven in 20 runs in the last 15 games and raised his average 23 points in just two weeks.

But, Josh Geer couldn't keep Russel Branyan in the yard, either. A 3-run shot way out to center put Seattle back up 3-2.

In the fifth inning, the Padres had a rally working; Tony Gwynn singled home a run, then Eliezer Alfonzo got caught up in a rundown to end the inning. The Padres didn't score again, but it was a different story for Seattle.

Franklin Gutierrez led off the eighth inning with a home run off reliever Edward Mujica, and the Seattle Mariners won their 19th one-run game of the season, 4-3. Gutierrez has homered four times in five games against the Padres, and has 3 homers in 60 games against the rest of the league.

Russell Branyan also hit his 18th homer of the season in the second inning for Seattle, a three-run shot that erased the Padres' early 2-0 lead. Seattle has won six of its last eight overall and improved to 19-13 in one-run games this season.
