Padres Avoid Sweep

Padres pitching coach Darren Balsley got the most out of his pitching staff Wednesday afternoon at Petco Park. Ian Kennedy's line was impressive: 7 IP / 0 ER / 4 H / 8 K. The bullpen did their job as well. Luke Gregerson and Huston Street each pitched an inning to preserve the 2-1 win.

Kennedy (6-8) got the win to even his record since joining the club at 2-2. Street secured his 24th save of the year in 25 attempts.

Yonder Alonzo was responsible for both the Padres runs. His sacrifice fly in the third scored Will Venable from third to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. Alonzo added a base knock in the fifth.

The Pirates scored in the eighth off of Gregerson to avoid the shutout. The 2-1 Friars win avoided a Pittsburgh sweep of the three game series.

The longest homestand of the season continues as the Chicago Cubs play a weekend series at Petco beginning Friday.
