Bartolo Colon is 41 years old. Bobby Abreu is 40 years old. Both now need to schedule regular prostate exams, yet both still play professional baseball for the New York Mets.
And both of them were a whole lot better than anyone on the Padres roster on Friday night in New York.
The Mets beat the Padres 6-2. Colon gave up a 2-run home run to Padres catcher Rene Rivera in the 2nd inning, then retired 18 consecutive Padres hitters to earn his 6th win of the season. Colon struck out seven in 7.1 innings.
Padres fans who are calling for Bud Black's head really need to take a look at this game. Up and down the lineup, Padres hitters were swinging through hittable fastballs. It was almost like all their bats had holes in them. There simply is not enough firepower in the lineup to expect this team to win.
Abreu went 4-for-4, finishing with one fewer hit than the entire Padres lineup. Abreu drove in two runs and scored two more.
Three of his knocks came off Padres starter Andrew Cashner, who had an off night, allowing four runs in six innings.
The Padres have lost a season-high five straight games, falling 11 games under .500.
