Chargers in Del Mar, Golden Opportunity?

Next stop Del Mar? In Mullen's opinion, everyone wins at this location.

Del Mar resident George Mullen suggested building a stadium at the fairgrounds. He says there's easy highway access, plenty of parking and near a Coaster station. In a letter to the editor of the Union Tribune, Mullen also points out the state is looking to possibly sell the fairgrounds to help close the budget deficit.

"The San Diego Chargers are in need of a new home. Coincidentally, an out-of-town distressed real estate owner (the state of California) is suddenly looking to sell the Del Mar Fairgrounds in order to raise desperately needed cash. A golden opportunity is before us. A marriage made in heaven, if you will," Mullen wrote to the Union Tribune.

Mullen wrote that everyone wins at his location -- California, the Chargers, the fans, local businesses and hotels, the nearby cities and residents and the City of San Diego. Public transportation is close by, the fairgrounds is well tested with large crowds and the location will draw fans from Orange County and Los Angeles, Mullen wrote to the Union Tribune.

"The Chargers and other serious business-minded entities (Gaylord Entertainment, etc.) should seriously consider this golden opportunity. A distressed seller like the state of California hints at the opportunity of getting a dirt cheap price, along with the possibility of business and development guarantees," wrote Mullen. "Now is the time to strike a deal, before a reckless federal bailout of California is launched. "
