American Bode Miller took third in the men's downhill race Monday as Swiss skier Didier Defago ended a 22-year drought for his country and took home the gold in the Olympic event.

Defago brought Switzerland its first gold in the event since 1988, when Pirmin Zurbriggen won first place in the downhill.

The skier sped down the course in 1 minute, 54.31 seconds.

Miller, who finished behind Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal, was only .09 seconds behind Defago. Svindal, the defending overall World Cup champion, finished just .02 ahead of Miller.

Defago, 32, is the oldest man to win the Olympic downhill.
