Melvin Gordon's Season is Over

Chargers running back falls just short of 1,000 yards rushing

In their history, which goes all the way back to 1960, the Chargers franchise has only had 10 players rush for 1,000 yards in a season. That's a pretty good indicator of just how difficult it is to reach quadruple digits in the National Football League.

It’s also an indicator of just how darn good LaDainian Tomlinson was when he did it eight years in a row.

Melvin Gordon was well on his way to that milestone but he is not going to get there. The Bolts have ruled Gordon OUT of Sunday's season finale against the Chiefs at Qualcomm Stadium.

Three weeks ago Gordon injured his knee and hip diving for a loose ball in the first quarter of a loss to the Carolina Panthers.

During the last few weeks of practice he was trying to get healthy enough to play just a few more snaps and hit the millennium mark but it's just not going to happen.

Gordon will finish with 997 yards; an agonizing three yards shy of the goal for any professional running back.

With Gordon out the Chargers are down to their 6th and 7th string tailbacks. Former Aztec Ronnie Hillman will get the first shot at starting but he's only been active for two games. Andre Williams, who has spent most of the season on San Diego’s practice squad, will likely be active along with fullback Derek Watt.
