Only 28 hopefuls survived after 400 women tried out for the 2009 Chargers Girls squad.
San Diego Charger fans are all set: Their 2009 cheerleading squad is ready to go for the new season. Sure, they look good in their leotards and skimpy cheerleader outfits. And fans -- whether you are male or female -- scream or woof their raw enthusiasm for the mighty squad when the girls hit the field. Behind those pom-poms, though, there is more. Yup. They more than earn their rep as the Hottest Dance Team in the NFL as the game announcer screams in their intro.
Among the 28 members of the squad this year are a few veterans, including Marlina, who will be on the squad for her fourth season. Besides being one of 12 NFL cheerleaders to be featured in a SI Swimsuit edition, she has her own cleaning company. Who knew? Yup. After graduating from SDSU, she started the business with green in mind. Her company specializes in nontoxic, natural, eco-friendly cleaning methods. She's also a got a thing for animal rights and species conservation.
If you think Ashley looks familiar, that's because she's starting her sixth year on the squad. She brings all kinds of diversity to the game because of her Latino, Filipino, Irish, German and Russian heritage. A competitive gymnast with national awards and diving championship honors, Ashley says she loves to help others reach individual fitness goals.
Yup, there's more to the Charger Girls than meets the eye.
