The world famous Mavericks Surf Contest might be wiped out for good.
The lone sponsor, Barracuda Networks, has pulled out, saying it wants to redirect its efforts to other projects. At the same time, The Half Moon Bay Surf Group, which was formed to help run the contest, has announced it is disbanding.
The San Jose Mercury News says Barracuda had agreed to a three-year sponsorship of the contest, but since no contracts were signed, the company pulled out.
Mavericks did not happen this year. In February 2010, organizers dealt with criticism after violent waves hit the beaches, injuring a number of spectators.
Even though the surf contest may not go on, the major Hollywood movie, "Mavericks", will. Scottish actor Gerard Butler is slated to play Jay Moriarity, the Santa Cruz surfer who was a successful surfer at Mavericks. He died in 2001.
