Loss of Hardwick Hits Hard

Win or lose, quarterback Philip Rivers is usually upbeat when addressing the local media. That was not the case on Wednesday at Chargers park.

A somber Rivers took to the podium to discuss the neck injury to his close friend Nick Hardwick that ended his 2014 season and maybe his career, "I don't want to talk too much about it. I want to try and keep it together, but we've been through so much and it's always tough getting that news."

Hardwick has been like a mentor to sixth-year offensive lineman Rich Ohrnberger. Oddly enough it will  be the student replacing the teacher at center. "While I'm excited for the opportunity I'd like to have him out there," Ohrnberger said.

Hardwick is in the final year of his contract. The 11-year veteran has a history of neck, or "stinger" injuries.
