Let's Just Forget This And Move On

Padres Lose Big At Home

The Padres are one of the hottest teams in baseball. Since starting 5-15, they've gone 16-8, a 24-game stretch matched only by the St. Louis Cardinals, who happen to have the best record in the National League.

Those Cardinals tried to put the Padres in their place on Tuesday night at Petco Park.

St. Louis got a great start from Cy Young candidate Adam Wainwright and blew out the home team 10-2.

Wainwright went 7.1 innings, allowing one run and striking out six. Interestingly, it's the 9th time he's faced the Padres, but only his first win in the East Village.

The Padres pitching was nowhere near the same level. Edinson Volquez gave up five runs in six innings and Anthony Bass served up a grand slam to Daniel Descalso in the 8th inning.

The one bright spot for the Padres was second baseman Jedd Gyorko. The rookie had three of the Padres' seven hits. Gyorko leads all major league rookies in hits, multi-hit games, runs, total bases, and walks. If he keeps it up he has a chance to finish in the top 10 in NL Rookie of the Year voting, and playing in San Diego, a place national media outlets forget exists until Norv Turner goes on a post-game press conference tirade (like that ever happened), that's a tremendous feat!
