The Lakers guard Shannon Brown is enjoying some of the best success of his career — playing key minutes on a team in the NBA Finals — but now he is making headlines for another reason.

A Denver woman is suing Brown in civil court over an incident from before Brown was traded to the Lakers from the Charlotte Bobcats. Brown’s agent, Mark Bartelstein, said there is not much to this claim.

Bartelstein said the suit stems from an incident when Brown was playing for the Charlotte Bobcats, who played in Denver on Jan. 30. Brown was traded to the Lakers on Feb. 7. Bartelstein said that within 24-48 hours after the woman filed a police report, Denver police fully investigated her claims and "did not even pursue it. Prosecutors found nothing to pursue…."

"There was absolutely nothing to it," Bartelstein said. "I find it very interesting all of a sudden Shannon Brown has some success and someone decides to sue him civilly. People can draw their own conclusions. I stand by Shannon Brown. Everything Shannon has said to me as to what happened, the prosecutor verifies."

No details of the alleged incident have been released. The Lakers organization would not comment. Brown said that he knows his name will be cleared because he is innocent.

Bartelstein said the Bobcats organization hired a private investigator who looked into the claims as well, and that they reached the same conclusion as the police and Colorado prosecutor.

Still, as sex-related lawsuit in Colorado stirs up ugly memories in Los Angeles. Lakers star Kobe Bryant was accused of sexual assault on a woman in an Eagle Colorado hotel in June of 2003. In that case the prosecutor thought there was enough to charge Bryant and he stood trial — flying back and forth to court dates and Lakers playoff games in a private jet — but Bryant was acquitted on the charges.

No civil case was filed in that incident.
