Negotiations on the plan to build a new Chargers stadium in San Diego will begin next week between the San Diego Mayor and the Chargers Chairman, a spokesman confirmed Wednesday.
According to Tony Manolatos, a spokesman for the Citizens Stadium Advisory Group (CSAG), Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Chargers Chairman Dean Spanos plan to meet on June 2 to negotiate a game plan for the proposed 65,000-seat facility that would replace San Diego’s aging Qualcomm Stadium in the Mission Valley area.
For its part, CSAG announced a financing plan for the stadium last week. The plan included a $1.1 billion price tag for building the new stadium, with the Chargers contributing $300 million of that figure. The plan also banks on the city selling 75 acres of public land for $225 million.
Now, at this point, city leaders and the Chargers will work out a deal to eventually present to voters.
Last week, Faulconer said he wants to have an agreement with the team approved by a public vote although the CSAG recommendations do not require new taxes or a 2/3 vote to move forward.
The hope is that the new stadium will keep the Bolts in San Diego and stop the team from moving to Carson, Calif., where they could share a stadium with the Oakland Raiders. A complex land transaction was completed on May 19 that would allow for the construction of the joint stadium in Carson.
