Gulls Get Goalie Reinforcements

Enroth returns from Anaheim to help between the pipes

The Gulls are in the playoffs but their goalie situation is anything but solidified. They were going to have to go it by committee with head coach Dallas Eakins playing either Dustin Tokarski or Kevin Boyle, whichever one has the hot hand.

Both have been at times very good and not so great this year. On Monday the Gulls got a guy who might be the difference-maker.

The Anaheim Ducks reassigned Jhonas Enroth to San Diego. After joining the Gulls in January Enroth, a veteran of six NHL seasons, went 10-2-0 with two shutouts, a 1.42 goals against average and .944 save percentage in San Diego. If you’re unfamiliar with hockey statistics those numbers are otherworldly good.

The Ducks called him up when former Gulls goalie John Gibson suffered an injury. Gibson is ready to return so Enroth is heading back down from Orange County.

San Diego has eight games left in the regular season, five of them against the Ontario Reign. Interestingly it’s looking more and more likely the Gulls and Reign will face off in the first round of the Calder Cup Playoffs as well.

These teams do not like one another. Their parent clubs, the Ducks and Kings, do not like one another. The prospect of playing 10 games against one another in a three week span is not likely to dampen their rivalry.
