Golfers Are Athletes, Too!

And they set out to prove it in Florida

There's an old joke among athletes from the "Big 4" American sports (Football, Baseball, Basketball, Hockey) that golfers are not actual athletes. You've probably heard something like that before.

Well, this week in Florida before the WGC event at Trump National Doral, a few of those golfers got a chance to prove they are, indeed, athletic.

Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson and J.B. Holmes all grew up playing other sports. Garcia is a Spaniard so he's a soccer guy. Johnson was a college basketball player. Holmes was a baseball player with a pretty good arm before getting the golf bug.

So, Garcia challenged U.S. National Team member Alexi Lalas to a PK contest ... Johnson tried to make more 3-pointers than NBA Champion Shane Battier ... and Holmes tried to out-throw Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

Dustin won. J.B. won. Sergio narrowly lost. Check out the video, it just might change your minds on the athletic ability of golfers!

(At the end of the video you'll see American sprinter Maurice Green running against a junior golfer who's also a track star and getting a closer race than he bargained for!)
