Foul Ball Hits Fan in Back of Head at Cubs-Pirates Game

A foul ball flew off Starlin Castro's bat and hit a fan in the back of the head at the game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Chicago Cubs on Monday night, delaying the game 23 minutes as she was taken out of the stands on a stretcher.

The Pirates said in a statement the woman was conscious and alert when she was taken out of the seating area on a stretcher. She gave a thumbs-up gesture to nearby fans before being taken to a hospital.

The woman was standing in the first row behind home plate with her back toward the field when Castro fouled a ball straight back against the protective screen. The screen did catch the ball, but it wasn't enough to prevent the ball from traveling into the stands.
