Former Aztec on USMNT Roster

Corona has a chance to play for USA

U.S. Men’s National Team head coach Jurgen Klinsmann announced Sweetwater High School alum and former San Diego State Aztec Joe Corona is on his 35-man provisional roster for the October 10th showdown against Mexico at the Rose Bowl. The winner gets one of eight spots in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia.

Corona was on the roster for the previous two friendlies for the U.S. against Peru and Brazil. The 25-year-old midfielder is no stranger to big matches. In 2013, Corona scored two goals in five matches for the USMNT in the Gold Cup, helping the U.S. claim their fifth tournament title.

He’s also familiar with the opponent. Corona, a dual citizen of the United States and Mexico played for Mexico’s Under-22 squad in 2011 before joining the U.S. National team in 2012. That same year Corona helped the Club Tijuana Xolos clinch its first Liga MX Championship. He now plays for Veracruz.

Klinsmann can only carry 23-players on the final roster that will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
