Ex-NFL Star Enters Plea

A former NFL star appears entered pleas Monday in connection to a string of assault charges made against him.

Lawrence Phillips pleaded not guilty in San Diego Superior Court Monday afternoon to a string of assault charges in connection with two incidents in 2005.

Phillips strangled his live-in girlfriend on two different occasions, according to prosecutors. On Aug. 2, 2005, Phillips choked his girlfriend until she was bleeding and lost consciousness, according to Deputy District Attorney Nicole Cooper.  He also said Phillips choked her again and threatened her two weeks later as well.

Prosecutors said Phillips stole the woman's car and drove it to Los Angeles, where he drove onto a field, striking three teenagers.

A hearing is set for April 24 to determine if there is enough sufficient evidence to bind Phillips over for trial.

The running back was a standout for the Nebraska Cornhuskers before going on to play for the St. Louis Rams, among other teams.
