[UPDATE, Thursday 6:19 a.m.] A news conference is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday. Beckham will be joined by Galaxy General Manager and head coach Bruce Arena, and AEG President & CEO Tim Leiweke.

The deal is likely to include allowances for Beckham to play for England during the Summer Olympics, which overlap with the Galaxy's season.

His return comes as no surprise after a deal was not reach with French club PSG.

Beckham is coming off his best season with the Galaxy, playing a large role in the team's 2011 MLS Cup drive. The MLS title gave Beckham soccer titles in England, the United States and Spain.

The 36-year-old's five-year contract expired after the 2011 season. He struggled through an Achilles tendon injury in 2010, but finished with 15 assists, second best in the league, and managed to remain healthy in 2011.

The MLS season begins in March.
