Jets' Stud Cornerback Darrelle Revis Has Torn ACL, Likely Out for Season

The all-pro defensive player will have surgery on his injured left knee

All-pro Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis suffered a torn ACL in Gang Green's Week 3 victory against the Miami Dolphins and will have what will likely be season-ending surgery on his injured left knee.

A somber head coach Rex Ryan won't definitely rule Revis out for the season, saying Monday he just found out about the results of the MRI exam, calling it "horrible."

"Obviously that's a significant injury and something we are going to have to overcome as a football team, we understand that," Ryan said. "He's such a great player and a great teammate -- we're going to lose that presence."

Recovery from a torn ACL for a football player typically takes six months to a year. Ryan said Revis may have to wait several weeks before having surgery as doctors try to "get the knee healthy" before the procedure.

Revis was injured in the third quarter of the Jets' 23-20 overtime victory at Miami, falling awkwardly and grabbing at his knee even before he hit the grass. It was a non-contact injury, and he wound up covering his face with gloved hands in obvious pain.

It was Revis' first game back after missing a week with a concussion suffered in the season opener against Buffalo. In his two starts this season, Revis recorded four solo tackles, three assists, a fumble recovery, an interception and three passes defended.

The 27-year-old first-round draft pick out of Pittsburgh is widely considered the best shut-down cornerback in the league. His position on the field has been nicknamed "Revis Island," a phrase he trademarked, because opposing wide receivers tend to disappear when he covers them one-on-one.

Revis is a four-time Pro Bowler, a three-time all-pro player and 2009 AFC Defensive Player of the year.

Jet 2010 first-round pick Kyle Wilson will take over for Revis, starting opposite Antonio Cromartie. Ryan said those players and the rest of the defense will have to step up, together, to fill the gaping void left by their star corner.

"This is a team game, and as a team, we have to step up," Ryan said. "We accept the challenge."
