James Shields was fantastic Tuesday night.
He only allowed 3 hits and one run in 7 innings of work against the San Francisco Giants.
That was the good news for the Padres.
The bad news? Giants starter Johnny Cueto was even better.
Cueto tossed a complete shutout and racked up 11 strikeouts in a masterful performance to hand the last place Padres a frustrating 1-0 loss.
San Diego dropped its 4th straight contest and fell to 3-8 against NL West teams.
Both right-handers on the mound were locked in from the start.

Cueto scattered 7 hits over 9 innings while the Padres left 6 runners on base.
Travis Jankowski and Melvin Upton, Jr. were also caught stealing when Andy Green tried to jump start the offense by getting aggressive.
The Padres backed up Shields with some great defensive plays.
Infielders Alexei Ramirez & Jemile Weeks made good grabs with their glove and Upton reeled in a tough catch in left field.
Wil Myers also extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the 4th inning.
But San Diego falls to 7-14 with the loss and now sits 5 games behind the first-place Dodgers as of Tuesday night.
Andrew Cashner will try to snap the skid in the Wednesday matinee against Jeff Samardzija in the final game of the series at AT&T Park. First pitch is slated for 12:45 pm.
