Cubs Crush Padres at Petco Park

Chicago pounds out 13 hits in lopsided win

On June 14 the Padres had won five straight series and were just 4.5 games out of first place. There was buzz that they might be able to be surprise contenders for a post-season spot.

On July 14 the Padres have the worst record in the National League.

That’s what happens when a team goes on a 7-21 stretch. San Diego’s latest setback was a lackluster 11-6 loss to the Cubs on Saturday night at Petco Park.

The good:

1st baseman Eric Hosmer hit a 2-run home run in the first inning. It was his first home run since June 12. Outfielder Hunter Renfroe hit a pinch-hit, 2-run home run in the 7th inning. Infielder Carlos Asuaje was on base four times with two hits and two walks. Robbie Erlin threw 2.2 innings of perfect baseball in relief.

The bad:

Pretty much everything else.

Starting pitcher Luis Perdomo was staked to that 2-0 lead on the Hosmer homer but quickly let the Cubs back in the game. Ian Happ took him deep for a solo home run in the 2nd inning and Kyle Schwarber smoked a 2-run blast off him in the 4th inning. Javier Baez chased Perdomo in the 5th inning with a 2-run double.

At this point one would have to think Perdomo, who has a 7.55 ERA, is out of chances to prove he has the ability to be part of a Major League starting rotation.

Baez added a 3-run home run in the 9th inning off Phil Hughes to put the game completely out of reach.

Chicago goes for the sweep on Sunday in the final game before the All-Star break. Padres rookie Eric Lauer gets the start against Cubs All-Star Jon Lester.
