In a move that is very much a shot across the bow of USS Faulconer the San Diego Stadium Coalition (SDSC) pledged its full support for the citizens’ initiative authored by the Chargers.
“This initiative provides a clear path to building a world-class multi-use facility that will help our city retain the Chargers, Comic-Con, Bowl Games and other economic drivers,” said Jason Riggs, San Diego Stadium Coalition Founder and Chairman, in a statement.
The Chargers have submitted their citizens’ initiative for a $1.8 billion stadium/convention center combination in Downtown San Diego. They are waiting for a mandatory grace period to end before they begin attempting to gather upwards of 100,000 signatures to try and get their plan on the ballot in November of this year.
The SDSC says it will employ as many of its 20,000 members as it can to help participate in the signature-gathering process, which is expected to begin before the end of April. Public pressure is slowly mounting as voters wait for Mayor Kevin Faulconer to make a decision on whether or not he’ll endorse the Chargers plan. Faulconer has said he will wait for further details on the proposal from the Chargers before issuing his opinion.
Chargers Special Advisor Fred Maas says the team is happy to have the SDCC on board.
“They’ve been in the trenches, working hard to advance the stadium issue since 2008,” said Maas. “We look forward to continuing to work with them to move our initiative forward.”
The Chargers have not yet released artistic renderings of their proposed convadium but those are expected to be made public soon.
