Chargers Eye Land to Build in Orange County

Bolts identify area to construct new training facility

In January of 2016, when the Chargers were on their quest for a move to Carson, they put a claim on some land in Santa Ana that they planned on using to build their training facility and corporate offices.

Of course they did not end up moving and let the land go.

Now that the Chargers are once again contemplating a move, this time to Inglewood, they have their eyes on another parcel of land in Orange County.

The Bolts have agreed lease a large chunk of land in an office building called The Hive, located in Costa Mesa near the 405 Freeway (ironically known as the San Diego Freeway). The team is asking for permits to build practice fields, a locker room and enough space to run their football operations.

If the team decides to stay in San Diego the lease will be voided.

This is not a guaranteed sign that the team will be exercising its L.A. option. It is simply business as usual. If Dean Spanos makes the decision to move, something he maintains he has not finalized yet, the team will need a place to practice.

On Thursday Spanos met with San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer, County Supervisor Ron Roberts, and interestingly San Diego State President Elliot Hirschman. The details of that meeting are unknown but it does offer an interesting scenario.

Faulconer and Roberts were instrumental in the ultimately doomed CSAG offer to build a new stadium with funds from the City and County kicked in on the Mission Valley site where Qualcomm Stadium currently sits. Hirschman of course has a football team that plays in that area, as well; the Aztecs call The Q home.

The involvement of all four men together could be taken as a sign that the possibility that a new stadium built in Mission Valley is at least being floated and possibly considered.
