Chargers Draft A Tight End

Bolts grab another pass catcher in 2nd round

The Chargers had bigger needs in the NFL Draft than another tight end but when the top-rated player at a position falls to you in the 2nd round it's hard to pass him up.

The Chargers selected Hunter Henry, a tight end from Arkansas, with the 35th overall pick. Henry caught 51 passes for 739 yards and three touchdowns his junior year with the Razorbacks.

Future Hall of Fame tight end Antonio Gates signed a new 2-year contract in the off-season but at the age of 35 that will be his final NFL deal. The Bolts also added Jeff Cumberland from the Jets on a free agent contract but they lost Ladarius Green when he signed as a free agent with the Steelers.

Henry is regarded as the best tight end prospect of the 2016 Draft class. He earned a reputation as a guy who can make big catches in traffic (Henry has no drops last year) and is committed to blocking in the run game, meaning he does not have to be substituted for and can stay on the field regardless of the down and distance.

The Chargers fan base was excited about the prospect of grabbing UCLA linebacker Myles Jack, a top-5 talent who fell to the 2nd round after questions about his knee surfaced. Jack was selected by the Jaguars with the next pick. San Diego still needs to add help on the offensive line at some point in the Draft.
