With their third round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Chargers made in interesting, some might even say curious, choice.
The Bolts took Craig Mager, a defensive back from Texas State. Most folks have not heard of Mager. Many of them had no idea Texas State has a football program. So, let's get to know Mr. Mager.
During his senior year with the Bobcats, Mager had 63 tackles with three interceptions and a pair of sacks.
Mager is a four-year starter known for his big hitting ability (which is certainly the theme of the Chargers' 2015 Draft so far). He's known as an explosive athlete and sure tackler who ran a 4.44 time in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine (third-fastest in this year's DB class). Mager landed on the radar of several teams with an outstanding showing during practices for the East-West Shrine Game.
The knocks on Mager are his height (only 5'11" tall) and questionable instincts. While reliable, he has not shown a consistent ability to make big, game-changing plays.
However, with his speed and physicality, the Chargers could very well be looking at him as a safety. The Bolts need depth at the spot behind Eric Weddle and Jahleel Addae, especially if they can't work out a new contract with Weddle. At just 201 pounds, Mager would need some bulking up but in an NFL strength program that's a possibility without losing any of his speed.
Barring a trade, the Chargers have two more picks to make, in the 5th and 6th rounds on Saturday.
