Chargers Add Mike Nolan as Linebackers Coach

Since becoming head coach of the Chargers, Mike McCoy has tried to surround himself with the best assistants possible. That was evident when he hired Ken Whisenhunt, who took the Cardinals to the Super Bowl as a head coach to be his offensive coordinator in 2013.

Not all rookie coaches would be comfortable having someone that accomplished under him. McCoy doesn't care about that, he wants to win games. So he's hired another former head coach.

The Chargers added Mike Nolan as their new linebackers coach on Thursday. Nolan was the head coach of the 49ers from 2005-2008 and is one of the most accomplished defensive coordinators in the game.

“Mike is a tremendous coach with a wealth of experience and he’ll be a great addition to our coaching staff,” said McCoy in a statement. “I’ve known him for many years having coached both with him and against him and it’s great to have him here with us with the Chargers.”

Nolan joins a Chargers staff that will remain largely intact from 2014.
