Bryant's Cubs Clobber Padres

Former USD star hits 32nd Homer

Former University of San Diego star Kris Bryant bashed his National League-leading 32nd home run of the season Monday night as the Cubs beat the Padres 5-1.

Bryant went yard in the 5th inning to give Chicago a 3-0 advantage. He tied Colorado's Nolan Arenado for the NL-lead with the towering blast.

Jason Heyward followed suit a couple batters later with a two-run bomb that extended the visitors lead to 5-0.

The Padres avoided the shutout in the 7th when Ryan Schimpf scampered home and scored on a wild pitch, but other than that, Jon Lester and the Chicago bullpen held the Padres offense in check.

Lester pitched six innings and struck out eight batters while allowing just one run on five hits.

Edwin Jackson made the start for the Friars against one of his many former teams but gave up three total home runs. Addison Russell went yard with nobody aboard in the 2nd to start the scoring.

Infielder Luis Sardinas also made his Padres debut and made a difficult catch in the 4th inning in shallow right field while colliding with a sliding Patrick Kivlehan.

The two rookies appeared to emerge from the dicey collision unscathed and with just dirty uniforms.

Sardinas batted 8th in the lineup and finished 1-3 with a strikeout.

Travis Jankowski has reached base safely in 21 consecutive games which is currently the longest streak of that kind in the majors.

Despite the loss, the Padres are still 18-5 this year when Jankowski steals a base.

The Padres will try again Tuesday when Christian Friedrich and Jake Arrieta take the mound.
