Here's one for you runners or wannabees: a race over the snow wearing snowshoes. It's the third annual "Snowshoe the Bear" up at, where else - Big Bear. It's set for the first weekend in February so you still have time to prepare and maybe throw in a practice session or two.
There will be two courses in what is slated as a family fun event. For the beginners there is a 5k race. For the more experienced, a 10k event is planned. Both start in Big Bear Village then extend into the forest south of town and back to the village for a celebration and the handing out of prizes and medals in a number of categories.
You'll need to bring your own snowshoes. If you don't own a pair you can either buy them now or reserve a rental at one of the sports shops in Big Bear.
The date again is Feb. 6. On your mark, get set - SNOW-shoe.
