‘Big' Night on Ice Gets Visit from Charger

Big Brothers and Sisters took their mentees on an ice skating adventure

Big Brothers and Sisters joined dozens of children Monday night for an ice skating adventure and visit with Santa.

The "Big Night on Ice" is an annual event for the organization to celebrate the holidays with kids in need. About 300 volunteer mentors and their mentees met on the Horton Plaza Ice Rink downtown Monday evening.

“Many of them have never been ice skating before, and this is a chance to experience the holidays with someone who cares for them and is there to be their role model,” said Tina Rose, marketing director of BBBS of San Diego County.

The kids and their big brothers and sisters got a special visit from Chargers offensive tackle Jeromey Clary, who joined Santa and Mrs. Claus for a meet-and-greet with the kids and their mentors.

“It’s an awesome event and I love it,” Clary said. “It’s fun to see the relationship bigs have with their kids.”

The kids also had a sweater contest and enjoyed food from Taste of Sahara.

Rose said the organization is always looking for volunteers, and it currently has about 300 boys on the waiting list looking for male role models. Click here for more information.
