Aztecs Win NCAA Tournament Opener

SDSU shows improved shooting touch vs. St. John's

In the finale of the Mountain West Conference Tournament, San Diego State scored a total of 43 points in a loss to Wyoming.

In the first game of the NCAA Basketball Tournament, the Aztecs scored 40 points IN THE FIRST HALF against St. John's.

If this version of SDSU sticks around, they just might have another Sweet 16 run in them.

The Aztecs beat St. John's 76-64 in their opening game of the NCAA Tournament. San Diego State, who came in to the tournament with the worst scoring offense in the entire 68-team field, shot a blistering 47.2% from the field, well above their season average.

The 3-point shooting blitz was led by guards Dwayne Polee and Matt Shrigley, who combined to make 9 of 12 shots from beyond the arc. They were great compliments to forward J.J. O'Brien, who scored a team-high 18 points.

In the Round of 32 on Sunday, the Aztecs get the number one seed in the South Region, the Duke Blue Devils. That's one of those "Blue-Blood" programs coach Steve Fisher sometimes mentions. Duke is good, but not unbeatable. The winner books a trip to Houston for the Sweet 16.
