Aztecs Return to the NCAA Tournament

SDSU beats New Mexico to win the Mtn. West Conference title and a spot in March Madness

Trey Kell is not ready for his senior season to end just yet so San Diego State is going to play another basketball game.

In the NCAA Tournament.

Kell, a guard from St. Augustine High School, scored 28 points (21 in the second half) to lead the Aztecs to a 82-75 win over New Mexico in the Mountain West Conference Tournament championship game and earn an automatic spot in March Madness.

SDSU is back in the 68-team championship field after a two year absence, which is amazing when you consider at one point this season they were 13-10 and had seemingly no chance to reach a post-season tournament of any kind.

But then they ran off nine straight wins, the last three coming in the MWC Tournament in Las Vegas, to give first-year head coach Brian Dutcher a successful inaugural year.

Malik Pope had 16 points and Devin Watson added 12 for the Aztecs, who find out where, who, and when they play in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
