Aztecs Open With Lopsided Win

SDSU shuts out New Hampshire in first game of the season

In today’s version of college football San Diego State is a throwback. The Aztecs are not going to try and chuck the ball all over the field and run 90 plays a game. They want to dictate tempo by running it effectively.

But that doesn’t mean they won’t take a big night of throwing the football, too.

SDSU opened the 2016 season with a 31-0 win over New Hampshire at Qualcomm Stadium. After a bit of a slow start, quarterback Christian Chapman and wide receiver Mikah Holder blew the game open. Chapman hit Holder for an 86-yard touchdown to get the Aztecs on the board. It was the 7th longest passing play in San Diego State football history.

Less than three minutes later running back Donnel Pumphrey found the end zone from 20 yards out to put SDSU up 14-0. Pumphrey finished with 98 yards on 21 carries.

In the second quarter Chapman and Holder hooked up again on a 14-yard score. Holder caught four passes for 160 yards and two scores, all in the first half. Chapman finished 16 of 25 for 283 yards and no turnovers.

San Diego State’s defense is supposed to be one of the better units in the nation and it did nothing to alter that thinking. The Aztecs held the Wildcats to 141 yards and sacked New Hampshire quarterbacks (the used two of them) four times, two of them by defensive lineman Alex Barrett. Linebacker Calvin Munson had 11 tackles, two for a loss.

Running back Rashaad Penny added one more rushing touchdown, going in from the one yard line in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring. The Aztecs open the season 1-0. They host Cal next Saturday.
