Aztecs Finish Amazing Week On The Mesa

Winners all over the place during a week spent honoring Tony Gwynn

San Diego State had been planning a week-long celebration of the life of Tony Gwynn for quite some time. Since Gwynn was a 2-sport star, the Aztecs timed it so the baseball team would be opening its series and the basketball team would have two straight home games.

Little did they know a bunch of other sports would get in on the party.

The basketball team won twice at Viejas Arena, taking out two of the best teams in the Mountain West Conference and grabbing first place all alone.

The baseball team swept Valparaiso at Tony Gwynn Stadium, which now has the number 19 permanently retired.

Those were the desired results when the week was planned. But, the Aztecs softball team also had a great weekend, winning all four of its games to take the Campbell/Cartier Classic and improve to 7-2 on the season.

The men’s tennis team whipped Pacific 6-1, and the women’s lacrosse team beat up on Western Ontario in an exhibition 21-2. It was a fantastic week, exactly what the late Aztecs legend deserves.
