Awesome Aztecs

Awesome Aztecs

It was wild, wacky and wonderful.  It was a night San Diego State football fans, players and coaches will remember forever. It was Aztec football at its best.

In front of an energetic, large crowd at Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego State beat Cal 45-40 in a game that took 4 hours to play. The game had over 1,000 yards of total offense, had offensive, defensive and special teams touchdowns, and oh yeah... a record breaking performance.

San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey rushed for a career high 281 yards and 3 TD's, but his most noteworthy accomplishment of the game was passing Marshall Faulk in the Aztec record book. A 14 yard run in the 4th quarter pushed Pumphrey past Faulk as the school's all-time rushing leader. Pumphrey's career total now sits at 4,651 yards and counting, the Aztecs still have 10 games left in the season.

San Diego State led by 17 points in the second half, before a Cal comeback made it a game.  With 23 seconds left in the game, Cal was just 22 yards away from the go ahead score.  However, Aztec defensive back Damontae Kazee sealed the win by intercepting Davis Webb's pass. Dating back to last season, it was the Aztecs' 12th straight win, longest in the nation next to Alabama.

San Deigo State is now 2-0 on the season and travels to Northern Illinois University this Saturday.
