Watch out North County, the 25th annual Carlsbad 5000 is making its return on Sunday, April 11.
The course, dubbed the World’s Fastest 5k is home to 16 world records and attracts both rookie runners and serious speedsters alike. The scenic run begins with a two-mile stretch along the Pacific and a finish in the heart of Carlsbad.
Race day begins at 7 a.m and features five individual 5k races, two elite races, a wheelchair invitational and a 5k walk. There will also be something for the little ones -- the 21st annual Junior Carlsbad will also be taking place and features a race for kids of every age, including a diaper dash for children two and under.
New to this year’s Carlsbad 5000 is the Endurance Challenge. Runners will have the opportunity to run all five of the individual 5k races. People who register in this group are those who are able to maintain a 10-minute or faster pace.

The top sports headlines of the day
With races come road closures, and this one is no exception. According to the race website, portions of Carlsbad Boulevard, Grand Avenue, Carlsbad Village Drive, State Street and Roosevelt Street will be closed at various times between 5:30 a.m and 4:00 p.m. Road closure specifics are located here.
