Heath Bell will toss relief for the NL All Stars.
Craig Elsten with 619Sports.com recently sat down with Padres All-Star Closer Heath Bell to talk about gearing up for his first All Star Game.
CE: How do you feel about being that representative for the National League?
HB: I'm fortunate to go out there and get a lot of saves this year. The Padres, we haven't done well but we've had a lot of tight games and I'm loving what I'm doing. I think at the end of the year it's all gonna sink in that I'm an All Star and all the accomplishments I've made this year.
CE: How do you feel about being a closer?
HB: I think I was just made to close games. I don't' think I could be a starter. I don't think I could sit every fourth day and pitch.
CE: Who are you taking with you?
HB: "My family. Wife and kids, mom and dad. I'm going there to have a blast. I'm taking my kids and we're going to be on the
field for the home run derby with Adrian Gonzalez. We're gonna fool around and try to get on T.V. somehow. During the All Star Game I'm gonna go in there and try to strike everyone out. I'm going to be sort of comical.
CE: There are a lot of talented Closers in this All Star game. Why should Charlie Manual give you the ball at the end of the game to protect the league over some of the other guys?
HB: Because if he does that we'll win the game.
CE: And as for the rough night against the Giants with Sanchez's' no hitter?
HB: Well, Sanchez is a good pitcher. He's got great stuff, but he's just never put it together. Last night he was just very fortunate to put it all together. The stars were aligned because we're not hitting the ball real well.
