Charger Antwan Applewhite Pleads Not Guilty

Chargers player Antwan Applewhite was arraigned Tuesday, pleading not guilty on suspicion of DUI according to the San Diego County Superior Court.

Applewhite faxed his plea, which is not uncommon in misdemeanor cases.

Applewhite was driving near Grand and Gresham in Pacific Beach around 2:20 a.m. on May 6 when he was stopped by a San Diego police officer.

The officer conducted a DUI evaluation and ended up transporting Applewhite downtown. He was booked at 4:09 a.m. and posted bail shortly after 10 a.m.

A woman riding with Applewhite was not detained and was transported home by police officers.

The outside linebacker, who first signed with the Chargers in 2008, also played for San Diego State University.

The Chargers released the following statement after the arrest:

"It's disappointing to hear about the issue involving Antwan Applewhite. We'll continue to monitor the situation and let the legal process run its course."
