UC Regents Surprise No One and Raise Tuition

Students of the University of California system are getting a harsh lesson in economics.

The UC Board of Regents' finance committee voted Thursday to raise student fees by 8 percent next fall despite a wave of recent protests by students.

The regents tried to help absorb the sticker shock by also approving additional student aid. The full board of regents is expected to approve the hike of more than $800 later on Thursday. Tuition has already been raised 32 percent this year.

Full time UC students in fall 2011 will pay just over $11,000 for tuition. The increase is expected to help generate up to $180 million for the cash-strapped system.

Built into the rate hike is a percentage of money that will go towards the UC system's new Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan to help families who make less than $80,000 pay for school.
