With less than three weeks until San Diego’s special mayoral election, the Registrar of Voters (ROV) is actively seeking bilingual San Diego residents to help at local poll sites on Nov. 19.

According to the ROV, residents who speak Chinese and Vietnamese are needed to help work poll sites. Bilingual poll worker volunteers can earn a stipend of $90 to $110 for their services.

Sept. 20 marked the official deadline for mayoral candidates to file their paperwork. It was also the night of the first mayoral debate among big-name candidates Kevin Faulconer, David Alvarez and Mike Aguirre. The debate was moderated by NBC 7's Wendy Fry. NBC 7's Chris Chan reports.

To volunteer as a poll worker, one must be a U.S. citizen, a registered voter in California and be able to read and write in English. The ROV says poll worker orientation classes are available for Chinese and Vietnamese volunteers.

Currently, there are more than 2,000 volunteer poll workers signed up for San Diego's special election. The ROV still needs 50 more Chinese bilingual poll workers and 30 more Vietnamese bilingual poll workers for Nov. 19.

For all the emphasis San Diego's leading mayoral candidates are putting on ‘message’, the key to getting elected figures to be the money and machinery that influential backers support them with. NBC 7's Gene Cubbison reports.

Mail ballot voting and early voting for the special election is already underway. A total of 572 polling places will be set up on Nov. 19 across San Diego neighborhoods.

The polling sites will remain open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. to serve the more than 675,000 registered voters in the county.

The special election will fill the mayor's position left vacant when embattled former mayor Bob Filner resigned from office in late August amid allegations of sexual harassment.
