Former First Lady Laura Bush said Monday she approves of the job President Obama is doing -- and that she also endorses the controversial speech the commander in chief is giving to schoolchildren this week.

"I think is [doing a good job]," Bush told CNN. "I think he has got a lot on his plate, and he has tackled a lot to start with, and that has probably made it more difficult."

Bush also said Obama's planned address to schoolchildren across the nation is appropriate, despite the negative reaction many Republicans have voiced about the speech. "I think there is a place for the president...to talk to schoolchildren and encourage them," she said.

Bush also complimented First Lady Michelle Obama, who's "doing great" in her role in the White House.
