Obama Endorses Mainstream Moderate in French Election

"Because of how important this election is, I also want you to know that I am supporting Emmanuel Macron to lead you forward," Obama said

Former President Barack Obama announced in a video posted to Twitter Thursday that he supports the mainstream Emmanuel Macron over the far-right Marine La Pen in the upcoming French election.

In his endorsement, Obama said of Macron, "He appeals to people’s hopes, and not their fears.

I’m not planning to get involved in many elections now that I don’t have to run for office again, but the French election is very important to the future of France and the values that we care so much about.

Macron is a strong advocate of a free market and entrepreneurial spirit has called for France to focus on getting benefits from globalization rather than the protectionist policies advocated by the far right.

In his political rallies, Macron encourages supporters to wave both the French tricolor and the European Union flags.

The 39-year-old independent candidate faces far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen in Sunday's presidential runoff.
