6 Injured When Horse Runs Loose at Equestrian Center

Six people were injured when a horse ran loose on a back trail

Screams rang out at a Southern California equestrian center Saturday when a rogue horse got loose, striking other horses and sending riders falling out of the saddles on its way out.

At least six people, including some children, were hurt when the horse ran loose on a trail at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center on Saturday about 11:43 a.m., according to the Burbank Police Department.

"I saw my kids fall off the horses, being dragged, my 6-year-old twins," a woman named Megan told NBC4.

"I fell back, I rolled off my horse," said her son, Thomas, who tried to hold on but was eventually thrown out of his saddle.

A horse got loose on a back trail at the center and struck other horses and riders as it ran away, said Burbank Police Sgt. Darin Ryburn.

"It was like pinballs," Megan said. "The horse just kept going. All of the horses started running and throwing riders off."

Six people - including at least two children - were taken to Providence St. Joseph Medical Center and the Los Angeles County Medical Center, police said. The victims had non-life-threatening injuries.

"About 15 horses came running towards me on my left, and a few of them didn't have riders so I knew we were really in trouble," rider Marian Hermansea said.

The horse was eventually contained, Ryburn said.

Police initially reported that seven people were injured but later revised the number of patients to six.
