DONALD TRUMP

Trump Would Have Fired Comey β€˜Regardless of Recommendation'

The president also said he reached out to FBI Director James Comey to find out if he was under FBI investigation

President Donald Trump told NBC Nightly News' Lester Holt Thursday he was going to fire FBI Director James Comey "regardless of recommendation," contradicting the initial version of events presented by the White House.

"I was going to fire Comey. There's no good time to do it, by the way," Trump told Holt, calling Comey a "showboat" and "grandstander."

The president also said he reached out to FBI Director James Comey to find out if he was under FBI investigation, explaining that he talked to Comey once during a dinner and twice by phone.

"I know that I'm not under investigation. Me. Personally," Trump said in the interview. Excerpts of the interview will air on the "Today" show Friday morning, as well.
