Army Sergeant Honored at Hospital for Heroic ‘Final Act'

A U.S. Army sergeant suffering from an incurable brain injury donated organs to two veterans "in his final act on this Earth," according to a close friend and partner in combat.

Staff Sgt. Matthew Whalen died of a brain hemorrhage Dec. 20.

Two honor guardsmen led a memorial service at the Fort Worth hospital where Whalen spent his final hours.

Footage of the emotional ceremony posted on Facebook by his "combat soulmate," Sean Hatton, has garnered more than 10 million views.

"In his final act on this Earth, it's only fitting that he gave his life and in return saved two others," Hatton wrote in the post. "And it's almost as if it were meant to be that the two donor recipients happened to be veterans."
